Robbie Savage has turned down the opportunity to join MLS new boys Vancouver Whitecaps in favour of staying in England. Savage posted on his tweeter feed today “Made my decision on the future and I’m going to stay here. Canada was a great option but it was to big a move for my family! So it’s going to be media full time in august or another club.” The Derby County midfielder and BBC pundits seemed to be impressed by the Vancouver club as he later commented “The Vancouver presentation was awesome looks like there going for it big time, lovely people a great chance for someone good luck Vancouver”
I think this is probably the right decision for both player and club. Savage appears to have a blossoming media career set for after his playing days, and certainly doesn’t need to uproot his family for a year or two in MLS. As for the club, there are better options to spend the salary cap money Savage would command to build a deeper squad more likely to challenge for a debut season playoff birth.
