The Subs Bench Podcast was started by Matt, Zach and Brent in late January of 2009. They met at the University of Windsor and instantly became friends through their love for the game. Three University of Windsor students have started The Subs Bench, a weekly football podcast on iTunes with an official website.
The podcast’s hosts and main website contributors are Matt Wooding, Zach Lawton and Brent Edwards. Other contributors include Sara Rawra and Ranjan Mukerjee, and international correspondents Jimmy Grinnell (England) and David Frendo (Australia/Asia).
“We don’t have the resources to break news stories so it’s an opinion website that focuses on issues and talking points and the podcast is a light-hearted look at the week’s events,” said Wooding.
The website includes blogs along with regular features such as Wooding’s Why They Hate Each Other, where he looks into teams’ long standing rivalries, and Player Diary, a humorous fictional look into football players’ lives. Lawton covers MLS (Major League Soccer) Mondays and the Friday Funnies, and Edwards, a qualified referee writes The Fifth Official, where he looks at controversial decisions regarding the officiating side of the game. Rawra covers the Quotes of the Week section, a feature both funny and inspirational.
In addition to the website and podcast, The Subs Bench has a Facebook group they use for football discussion with their fans.
Wooding and Edwards came up with the idea this past summer. “Like all good ideas it was born over a pint,” said Wooding.
They pitched their idea to friend and fellow football fanatic Lawton who jumped at the opportunity to get the project up and running.
The three of them set the goal of a January launch, which they met when the website went up on January 24th. There was an introductory podcast that same day, with their first official full-length podcast on January 29th debuting on both their website and iTunes.
For Wooding and Lawton the project is a major opportunity and chance for experience as both of them are looking for a future in sports broadcasting and journalism. “It’s said that you must create your own opportunities,” said Lawton. “This is a step in that direction.”
The group has high hopes for The Subs Bench and even if it doesn’t make it big they agree that it looks great on a resume. “Hopefully the quality of what we do will get better and better and by word of mouth The Subs Bench will get around until we’re in a position to attract advertisers,” said Wooding.
You can find the The Subs Bench website at www.thesubsbench.ca. Their podcast is free to subscribe through the iTunes store or their website.
